Addiction is a chronic, treatable illness. General principles of good care for chronic diseases can guide OUD treatment. Patients with OUD should have access to mental health services as needed, medical care, and addiction counseling, as well as recovery support services, to supplement treatment with medication. The words you use to describe OUD and an individual with OUD are powerful. For more information visit SAMHSA TIP 63: Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Treatment.
